Woller of London Stick Barometer
Circa: 1820 - 1830
Case: 19 century. Bulb cistern barometer having architectural
pediment top.
Silvered brass register plates and Fahrenheit thermometer.
Mahogany veneered case with herringbone stringing,
Maker: Believed to be made by Matthew Woller and his son Charles
Woller, since there
is no defining signature of the maker.
Matthew Woller was working at 51 Edgbaston Street Birmingham from 1800 - 32 and
made some stick barometers with printed paper plates. He also made large wheel
barometers with a clock above the dial.
Charles Woller the son was working on his own account 1835-68 at 63 Edgbaston
Street, Birmingham his product range including clocks, watches and musical boxes.
The original Woller family headed by Matthew were German and commenced in Birmingham
in 1800 selling German clocks and barometers.
It appears a branch of the family also established itself in Norfolk.
