Case:
Oak with caddy top, gilded finials, painted scrolling freeze above dial and mahogany cross banding to hood and trunk door.
Brass capped pillars to hood, repeated at rear and brass capped quarter pillars to trunk.
Long trunk door with wavy top and large brass escutcheon.
Canted mahogany sides to base with inlay and bracket feet.
Width at widest point 22.25 ins (hood).
The case is of very similar construction to those of nearby David Collier in Gatley and both makers appear to have been supplied by the same cabinet maker.
Dial:
12" square brass dial with well painted central landscape scene featuring two well
dressed gentry and a possible poacher.
Silvered chapter ring with central sweep second hand and steel hour and minute hands.
Date dial and Rocco spandrels.
Roman numerals.
Maker:
Ralph Clayton's known working dates in Marple were 1750-1769. He was the son of clockmaker John1 and brother to John 11 and Joseph.
In 1762 he married Mary Linney at Stockport. Two of his father's clocks also bear Ralph's name, one of which is dated 1750. In 1769 he inherited land and half of his father's tools, his brother John 11 the other half.
