Ref: WLC-15 Wall Clock
Black Forest Cuckoo & Quail.
Duration : 30 hours
Circa : 1900
Height : 31 inches
Very seldom did the early clockmakers sign their work, partly because as many as 6 trades could have been involved in producing the finished clock, but this clock has a brass movement manufactured by Gordian Hettich & Sohne of Furtwangen. Trade mark, GHS, is stamped on the brass movement.
Cuckoo and Quail are birds of the Black Forest but the Cuckoo winters in Africa while the Quail does not migrate, but retreats into deep forest at winter time. The Cuckoo calls the hour on the hour while the Quail calls the quarters once for the 1st, twice for the 2nd, thrice for the 3rd and four for the 4th.
The three pine cone iron weights drive the movement which is of 30 hours duration but this can be extended if the birds' entrance doors are kept closed.
Guarantee : 12 months.
